Every wedding begins with two people.
Every marriage is built because of many more.
When I began creating Black & White Portraits, I spent a great deal of time thinking about what guests take home from a wedding. Yes, they receive a beautiful portrait, but I kept asking myself another question.
What do the couple take home?
The obvious answer is photographs.
But I don’t believe photographs are the greatest gift created during a wedding.
The greatest gift is being surrounded by the people who helped shape your life.
Parents who encouraged you.
Grandparents who shared their wisdom.
Brothers and sisters who grew up beside you.
Friends who celebrated your victories, supported you through difficult seasons, and stood with you on one of the most important days of your life.
A wedding is one of the rare occasions when all of those people gather in the same room.
They come to witness your beginning.
That realization changed everything for me.
I knew I didn’t want couples to simply receive a gallery of portraits. I wanted them to receive something they could return to again and again—a reminder not just of what their wedding looked like, but of the people who filled it with love.
That is how Those Who Held You was born.
Every guest who steps into our portrait studio also has the opportunity to write a personal message to the couple. Some write a few simple words of congratulations. Others fill the page with memories, advice, or heartfelt wishes for the years ahead.
Those handwritten messages become just as meaningful as the portraits themselves.
Together, they create something that cannot be recreated.
An album where every portrait is paired with words written on the day they were felt.
Years from now, those messages will still carry the handwriting of a parent, the humour of a lifelong friend, or the wisdom of a grandparent. They become voices preserved on paper, speaking across time in a way that digital messages rarely can.
When the portraits and the handwritten notes are brought together, the album becomes far more than a wedding keepsake.
It becomes a family heirloom.
Its pages tell the story of everyone who stood beside you at the beginning of your marriage.
Everyone who celebrated with you.
